House on Hornby Street, Liverpool
« on: Monday 11 September 23 18:29 BST (UK) »
In 1859 my relative, Uriah Halsall died. In his Will, as well as leaving things to his daughter and two grandsons he left another property in Liverpool. The line in the Will reads:

'I give and devise my freehold messuage or dwelling house in Hornby Street, Liverpool unto Ann Brown widow (who now resides therein)'.

I wondered if Ann may be a relative, a lover or just a tenant who had been there for some time. Uriah had been himself widowed for 8 years when he died but was also at the ripe old age of 84. I guess I'll never know if she was either of the later but wondered if she may be a sister perhaps.

I also wondered if there were any paperwork about the property, or where it was - perhaps with his name on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks, Luke

Have you found her in the 1851/61 census?  ER's for Hornby St 1853-1863 show nobody called Brown

Good catch CaroleW. I've checked again and although Uriah Halsall died on 20th December 1859 his Will was written and signed on 4th September 1851 so by 1859 she may no longer have been living there and may even be deceased. I don't have any records at all for Ann Brown other than her name in the Will.
Thanks, Luke

do i have this right Luke ?
died 1859 aged 84 = b 1775
married aged 19 in 1794
..............................................
Marriage: 22 Sep 1794 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Uriah Halsall - Brick layer, Liverpool
Maria Wakefield - Spinster, Liverpool
    Witness: John Wright; Peter Bankes
Married by Banns by: R. Blayney, Curate
    Notes: [Bride signed Wakefile]
...................
if he married aged 19 - wouldn't the records state - MINOR ????  he is a Bricklayer on the record - meaning at least 21 as they served a 7 year apprenticeship in those days - if he was 19 it would state Apprentice Bricklayer ... so this would point to Uriah being at least 86 at death , if not older ?

where did you get the info he was aged 84 at death ?

Ann was 74 in 1851 census and died in 1852 aged 75
so born 1777
...............................Uriah died 20th Dec 1859
his probate was issued 18th June 1860 naming only 2 people
Mary Halsall Kelshaw
William Kelshaw

................
my thoughts are that Ann was his sister ...

Heywood, that looks like the one to me. Great stuff!

Garsonite, I got the age from his death certificate which reads:

Date and Place of Death: 20th Dec 1859, 5 Woodville Terrace, Weston, Everton.
Name and Sex: Uriah Halsall, male
Age: 84 years
Occupation: Gentleman
Informant Name: Uriah H Jones
Informant Address: 94 Chatsworth Street, West Derby.
Qualification: Present at death
Date of Registration: 23rd Dec 1859
Causes of Death: Bilious Fever 8 Weeks, Retention of Urine 6 Weeks

I hadnt realised the length of apprenticeship involved but the witness was his grandson and may have got his age wrong.

I think she may be his sister too.

The Will names Mary Kelshaw's two sons as executors but the Will predates Mary marriage to William Kelshaw.

Thank you both!

According to the census, Ann Brown was born Lancaster though  :-\

Sometimes I have seen Lancaster/Lancashire mixed up but in this case others around her are all b Liverpool so it does not seem an error.

Perhaps she was a tenant he looked kindly on then.
