West Family from Muff (Eglinton)
« on: Thursday 14 September 23 13:19 BST (UK) »
Looking for long lost relatives of the West Brothers.
John, Thomas & Major (a surgeon) who went to Australia between 1815-1821, Henry & James who stayed behind in Ireland all from the area around Muff (Eglinton).

Any help would be great

3 West households in the 1831 census for Faughanvale (the parish including Muff). Henry & James are the heads of the households:

The above household appears to have been empty.

Death of a Joseph West of Gortenny in 1880 (Gortenny is on the south side of Muff village):

His wife Martha in 1890:

Their son Henry in 1901:

And 1911:

Administration of the Estate of Henry West late of Gortinney Eglinton County Londonderry Farmer who died 8 January 1917 granted at Londonderry to Joseph West Farmer.

Probable death for Matilda on 12.3.1922 registered in Londonderry. That’s not viewable free on-line. You need to pay to view on the GRONI site.

Hello Wallabywest - good luck on your search, particularly in Co. Donegal. A tricky place to research. The name West does not have a big footprint in this part of the world. My McClure research in the county has unearthed only one reference. Not surprising since my main focus is the McClures. One of my ggrand Aunties had a liaison with an unknown West at Killynure[Convoy] area about 1869. This liaison produced a child. About the same time 3 of her nephews came to Australia [Vic]. Happy to chat if any of your Donegal WESTs found their way to Killynure from Muff.

Cheers
Jack Gee
