You might want to check this out for Alexander McLeod going by the surname Campbell
I noticed the marriage certificate for Peter Campbell McLeod on a tree on Ancestry
I noticed the address was 34 Mains Street Carsdyke

On the 1861 Census at 34 Mains Street Carsdyke home of Thomas /Helen Thomson
There is a Alexander Campbell age 25 born Greenock  riveter in Iron Yard age out by few years (lodger .) Looks like this Helen Thomson was previously married to Thomas Orr

There is a marriage 4 /3/1862 Hutchestown
Alexander Campbell
Helen Fraser

You can find them on the census records in Greenock
Helen Fraser Campbell died 12 Sep 1896 Greenock

A possible death for Alexander Campbell 1911 age 75 Greenock mother maiden name Campbell.

Think it's worth checking

Another possibility for Helen McLeod/Campbell on the 1841 census she has a lodger
William Neilson age 30 born England occupation joiner
There is a marriage for a William Nelson 16 November 1841 Middle or New Parish Greenock to Helen Campbell

1851 census Botchergate Cumberland Carlisle
William Nelson 42 born Northumberland ( joiner )
Helen Nelson 41 born Scotland
Norman Nelson 13 born Scotland
Peter Nelson 11 born Scotland
Dorothy Nelson 6 born Scotland
William Nelson 3 born Carlisle .Gro.gov mothers maiden name Campbell
Helen Nelson 3 months born Carlisle ( mothers maiden name Campbell)

Norman and Peter are not on the 1861 census with the family and no sign of Alexander

Helen Nelson /Campbell died 1892 Cumberland Carlisle

Might be worth taking a chance viewing the marriage 1841 I know there is not much information but it might give you address ?

Thanks for those hints, Rosie.

Alexander Campbell, who married Helen Fraser, has Alexander Campbell and Jane Campbell as his parents.

The Alexander Campbell living as a lodger with the Thomsons in the 1861 Census could be my Alexander, since Peter Campbell McLeod married Janet Orr, the daughter of Helen Thomson, previously Orr, mn Mann.

Now the marriage of William Nelson to Helen Campbell in 1841 is interesting and I will be following this up. The OPR only shows the names.

Charlie
Fife: Shepherd, Nellies, Beveridge, Litster, Simpson
Lanarkshire: Sorbie
WRY: Simpson, Brooksbank

Sorry it's the wrong one
