I am not familiar with the outfits of alter boys at that place and time in history. The broach does look rather ornate - but perhaps it was a high mass of some kind. There are other pics I have found of similar (Episcopalian - altar boys that seem to have broaches of a sort.

Thank you all for your thoughts, and particularly the photo from jmagarac, I'm sort of comfortable now that this is an altar boy (or young man). I found online some quite elaborate 'pins' apparently worn for this purpose.
Sadly the dates just don't work out for the rellies I know of in Sheffield, so it's not resolved. But I'm wiser, nonetheless.
