Details of occupation
« on: Friday 15 September 23 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi I am looking for some help in working out this part of the census attached ( Scotland 1850) I'm stuck on trying to decided what it says for George Leids occupation. I think I can see 'farmer of 5 acres' but cannot work out the other words which are included there. Thank you

Yes, Farmer of 5 acres.
Then below that possibly - Sawyer

Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

FindMyPast  has transcribed as "Farmer of 5 acres owner of smack"

I read "smack" when I first looked at the snip but not the previous word which looked more like "honor"? The word below "Farmer of 5 acres" looks like "sawyer"

"Smack" could relate to a small fishing vessel?

Update - beginning to see "Owner" not "Honor"!!

Thankyou both - that is now beginning to make sense. On his daughter's marriage details in 1848 he is recorded as  'ship owner residing in Shieldaig'. I had looked up the location of Shieldaig and found it to be coastal so possibly he had both interests in fishing and farming.

Amazing how you now the suggestion of the word 'owner' has been introduced ( thanks hames teulu) that I can read that too! I wonder if the work that look like sawyer could be the name of the boat?

To me it looks like there is possibly a "+" under the word farmer, so I  would take that to mean its an additional occupation for him.

Farmer of 5 acres + sawyer, owner of a smack

Correct. I agree.
It is an interesting entry, because it really gives a full picture of what he did to make a living.
