What is the whitish thing that prodrudes from the coat pocket of the older man and also the younger one on the  left?

It does not look quite like a pocket kerchief and it seems the same on both men.

The first one is definitely collaged/overprinted from other photos. I used to do quite a lot of negative/image manipulation for artwork.

I think they are poorly drawn pocket squares

I think the older man has a floppy silk pocket kerchief and the young chap has a cotton kerchief.

Having looked through scores of WWI documents noting male heights of 5ft to 5ft 5inches - , I think the man is the normal short height for the era.

As for their hands, they would be slimmer if the pair didn't do any lifting and carrying.

I don't know, but I wouldn't want to meet any of them on a dark night
