I think the older man has a floppy silk pocket kerchief and the young chap has a cotton kerchief.
Having looked through scores of WWI documents noting male heights of 5ft to 5ft 5inches - , I think the man is the normal short height for the era.
As for their hands, they would be slimmer if the pair didn't do any lifting and carrying.
