Newark Hat Trade
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 16:45 BST (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone know about the hat trade in Newark? I know a bit about Lancashire which was mainly felt, and there was a straw hat trade in Essex, but don't know Newark. There is a Thomas Collin there in 1841 not born in county, he could be from anywhere?
Thank you

In the Newark section of Pigot's Directory of Notts., 1828-9, there are five hat manufacturers listed, one of whom is Thomas Collins, Chain Lane.

In Holden's Directory of 1811, there are no entries for anyone named Collins of any trade in Newark.

Thank you, that's interesting as Thomas Collins was in Oldham when his wife died in 1811 and no mention of him after that, heusy have moved away

Yes they married in 1821, Thomas wasn't born in county. I wonder if there are any gravestone inscriptions for the parish church 1843? His wife died 1873, I think the churchyards would be closed by then. Thank you

Stodman Street.

Burial St Mary Mag. Newark
21 May 1843 Thomas Collin aged 61 abode Newark.

Also 24 Feb 1832 James Collin aged 26.

Marriage Newark
24 Aug 1821 Thomas Collin & Amaris Shaw.
Baptism
23 Oct 1824 Joseph son of Thomas & Amy COLLINS abode Newark father a hatmaker.

The gravestones for the Parish church are no longer in situ. They are laid flat around the church, as paving, or against the boundary in the area where the burial ground was, now a park.
Chain lane was never wide enough for motor traffic. There is a photo of a mini car (the original not the ginormous mini's of today) stuck in the market side exit.

The municipal cemetery was opened in 1856. It is on London Road.
