WA: Alfred CORBETT, Born 1828, Worcester, UK
« on: Tuesday 19 September 23 21:17 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Alfred CORBETT died in Victoria in 1906.

I have been trying to ascertain from Passenger Listings whether or not this "Parkhurst Boy" returned to England after completing his servitude in WA (main area North of Toodyay) circa 1849, with no success.   I appreciate he could possibly have "worked his passage", although there is evidence that the Home Office were asked if it was prepared to fund his ticket.......Answer: "NO"!!!!

He is possibly documented as having disembarked at Melbourne on 19/09/1853 from the "Star of the East", the clipper sailing from Liverpool.  It did not "stop" in WA!!!

Of course, he could simply have sailed from WA to Victoria via coastal shipping, but I can find no record.

Can anyone help, please.

So you mean this man? Death

CORBETT Alfd Alkench
Mother Sarah STERLING
Father   Richd
At C Hill
Age 75
Reg 1077/1906

Are you asking whether he went back to UK after his time in WA and then returned to Australia to settle in Victoria?

This 1906 death notice for him states the birthplace you have mentioned in your post  heading, so on the right track ;D

Noting that wife's name is Catherine on the death notice, is this his marriage in 1855 in Victoria:

Alfred Halkanah CORBETT and Catherine LAMBOURN (224 / 1855)

Modified to add:
A string of children (14) between 1856 and 1880 on the Vic BDM index.

The image of the Star of the East manifest show he was  ticketed with others.  Have you seen this?
Surnames are(I think) Compton, Bright, Kilchley. And another ?? Do you know these names?

We see a kind of bracket around this group in the names column signifying they are travelling together.

I see that a Richard and Sarah CORBETT of Rose Place, Worcester had a son Alfred Best CORBETT baptised on 22 June 1828. And there is the conviction on 3 Jan 1842 of Alfred CORBETT, sentenced to 7 years. The Alfred who died in 1906 has a distinctive middle name (which varies a bit in different records) but is not Best:-\

Modified to add:
Also noting that Alfred CORBETT is described as "gentleman" in his estate.

For interest, Catherine died 1919

I could be wrong - Richard and Sarah CORBETT appear in the 1851 census at St Paul's St, Worcester. He is a leather dresser. With them is a son Samuel (9).
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGCF-5QK
From the GRO, it would appear Samuel's mother's maiden name is GREEN. Richard CORBETT married Sarah GREEN by banns, 2 Jan 1826 at Worcester. This seems likely parents for Alfred baptised 1828.

Richard and Sarah CORBETT appear in the 1841 with son Alfred (13) and Samuel (6 m) at St Clement's Square, Worcester.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ51-2KD

Samuel is baptised 9 May 1841, parents Richard (a skinner) and Sarah, of St Clement's Square.

So not the same man as died 1906 in Victoria, unless the informant on the death certificate was mistaken about his mother's maiden name.  :-\
