Seeking death dates for John Lowther (1758-) and Mary Lowther (1766-)
« on: Tuesday 19 September 23 21:23 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'd like someone to have a look to find some death dates for two of my ancestors, John Lowther and Mary Lowther (nee Walter), John (b.1758) and Mary (b.1766) moved from Bath to London c.1800. They had Henry Lowther (1787-1795), Mary Walter Lowther (1792-1827), John Townsend Lowther (1793-), Betty Lowther (1794-1794), Charles James Lowther (1800-1866) and John Lowther (1802-). I know their further ancestries, and John was a prolific builder and architect in Bath and then London. The latest date I know John to be alive is 1822 in Charles James Lowther's Freedom of the City papers, where John is described as Builder living in Great Queen Street, Lincoln's Inn Field.

Thanks,
Francis

This document is dated 6 December 1815, not 1822, despite Ancestry's page-header.

Possibility, as the address is also in Holborn ...

The News (London), Monday 13 April 1829
DIED
On the 2d inst., at Guernsey, Mr. John Lowther, of Devonshire-Street, Queen square.

But you really need a burial record to check his age. Guernsey burials aren’t online – I think you would have to contact the Priaulx Library for a lookup.

Unless perhaps you can find a will?

I think you have found it Bookbox.

When his daughter Mary Walter Lowther died 1827 she was of Queen's Square, Devonshire Street.
----------------------------
The son John went bankrupt 1841 - Perry's Bankrupt Gazette 9 October 1841, there are many articles about the bankruptcy  in 1842 and it all seems to wound up in 1844.
Address was Queen's Row Pentonville.

He is back building houses in 1846

Wow, that's amazing  ;D
Thanks so much. One thing is bugging me; do we know if John Lowther the younger had any children? He was  described as 'widower' in his marriage to Eliza Stokes. Plus on his marriage his father is recorded as James  ???

Best wishes,
FG

John Lowther was a very common name in the area.

1841 census is John jr.
Bankruptcy 1841- 1844 is definitely him
1846 newspaper is him - back to building house.

**Get the will of 1858 he died 13 July 1857 spouse Eliza executor if it is the right man, he may mention family members and or children to  confirm. Cost is minimal
