Help with finding James Balls in 1871
« on: Wednesday 20 September 23 14:36 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon

I'm trying to locate my 2xgreat grandfather James Balls. He was born in Walpole (St Peter according to 1861 Census). His parents are Charles and Ann Balls and in 1851 they are all in Tydd St Mary, Lincs.

His eldest 3 girls are all born in Hull and then the remaining children are born in Lincolnshire.

I think I've found a potential marriage to an Elizabeth Naylor in Hull on 25 August 1879, although this is after the 3 girls are born so I'm not sure. The marriage has the grooms father as Charles Balls, which matches. Elizabeth according to census returns is from Boston, Lincs. Checking birth entries there is a birth for an Elizabeth Naylor in Boston around the correct time.

Anyway I know that by 1882 they are back in Lincs but just trying to locate him in 1871 - he could be in Lincs but also in Hull as children are born there.

I'm trying to figure out why he was in Hull and did he meet Elizabeth there?

Any help is much appreciated.

I think this is him in Sutton St Mary in 1861:

James Balls, unmarried age 15, born Walpole St Peter, working as a yard boy on Thomas Wing’s farm. So born c1846.

So I had birth date for Elizabeth wrong...she was born 1853. Searched for this and I found Elizabeth Naylor living in Walmsbury Place in Sulcoates in Hull in 1871.

I assuming then that James and Elizabeth met in Hull so he must be around there somewhere at that time.

I've had a quick lok for James nearby but haven't found him as yet.

Thank you for that.

That explains how Elizabeth ended up in Hull then and why they married there rather than back in Lincolnshire.
