H & T Ladders
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 00:05 BST (UK) »
In a sale of farm equipment in 1940, H & T Ladders are on the list in the local newspaper.

Anyone any idea what H & T is short for?   (Someone has suggested Hay and Thatch but .....)

Thanks

3 Waggons with H & T Ladders

Wagons with Ladders, referring to the construction of the wagon.
The wagons on the links below have "end ladders"

These wagons were used for carrying hay, so the H & T could still mean Hay & Thatch.

Hi, Tony

Thank-you for those links.

I like that idea, and it fits with hay, but I have not yet found a single example of thatch explicitly stated anywhere transported in such a vehicle.

I did not want to mislead by suggesting Hay & Thatch - any other suggestions, anyone?

Added: Just seen elsewhere an assumption that it stands for 'head and tail' - with no examples.  However I quite like that because those links are to ones with ladders at both ends.

Added: Those waggons : the front is known as the head board, and the back as the tail board.

I can't see any references to hay and thatch ladders, however there are many references to head and tail ladders in old newspapers.

eg Friday,  Oct. 9, 1925
Publication: Western Gazette

Ladders: A gate like frame fitted to the front and rear of a waggon as an extension to carry larger loads at harvest time.

Tail board: at the end of the bed, in many cases this was formed into a ladder for easy access to the waggon.

Yes, once one starts looking for head and tail ladders in the newspapers then a lot appear.
When I tried looking for H & T ladders I think I just found lots of mis-prints/mis-transcriptions (frequently of the word 'but'.)
