Margaret Williams/Harrigan/Nichols
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 03:50 BST (UK) »
I am researching the family tree of my Granddaughter's partner and am looking for Margaret Williams. She was born 4 Feb 1919 Beneaster, Doncaster, illegitimate daughter of Marjorie Williams. Marjorie married Robert Harrigan, and Margaret took his surname. Margaret then married James Nichols in Dec 1939, and they had twin daughters in 1943. James emigrated to New Zealand in 1952 with a new wife, and his twin daughters. Margaret appears on the 1939 Census Register as Harrigan, and her entry is annotated "Nichols" and "Tullock", with the names Linda Margaret added later in green ink. I found a marriage between Linda M Nichols and Kenneth Tullock in 1945 but have no idea if this is Margaret.  I'm stumped, can anyone throw some light on what happened to Margaret after 1943?

Hi

The 1939 registers were used by the NHS & it would have been them that added the other names.

It seems that she married Nichols after the register was taken, divorced him nearly straight away & then married Tullock, but she might not have got a divorce so she used Linda Margaret.
You might have to get the marriage certificate to see what is going on.

Thank you, John. I didn't know about the NHS annotating the records, so with that information I should be able to make progress.  It had crossed my mind that there was no divorce, which of course brings up other questions. But many thanks for your help.

Hi

Just been looking. It seems Kenneth Tullock was born 1920 & lived in died in the same area & they had a child in that area.

Another 2 possible children, born in the London area. A Linda M. Tullock marries a Gillies in that area but again no indication of a divorce but cannot find a death for her.

Complicated & you might have to get the certificates to prove the conxesion.

Hi John,
Just been looking too and found the same.  It seems Margaret had quite an interesting life! That would account for the fact that she completely lost contact with her family. Thanks again.

Couple of questions if I may.

1. Have you taken Margaret's dob from 1939 war register or do you have her birth certificate confirming that dob, I personally have many incorrect dob shown on war register.

2. Whilst it appears that Linda M Tullock married again in 1956, London electoral registers suggest she was living with James A from 1950-61.

SS

Added: there are 3 Gillies/Nichols births in London area starting in 1949.

Possible info for back burner.

1. 2nd Gillies/Nichols daughter born 1951 Camberwell married 1970 Camberwell.

2. Believe James A Gillies is James Angus Gillies born 10.8.1913-died 1983 Camberwell with same dob. He appears in 1939 with same dob with a "wife/partner" Louisa F (Nelson)cannot find a marriage for him to partner and she goes on to marry 2 times, jq 1939 Camberwell, and 1965.

Thank you, SS, you have been busy, much appreciated.  Margaret's 1939 d.o.b. correlates with the paperwork I have, and also with information I have from one of her close relatives who I contacted. Unfortunately, in 1939 Margaret chose to sever contact with that side of her family too, and they know nothing about her subsequent life either. I will certainly look into all the information you have provided, and hopefully, it will provide some answers.  Thank you all again.
