Donague Family on the 'Eagle' 1853
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 06:09 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Looking for some help on where to find out more about the 'Eagle', a 468 tonne barque from the Perrin, Freestone & Co's American line of packets. According to the immigration record on 31st Dec 1853 from the New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Crew Lists 1820-1957, the master was a Thomas Quance. I can't seem to find the shipping reports for this vessel leaving Bristol or arriving in New York around this time. I've also checked Glasgow as the potential departure port as I know the port of departure listed on these passenger lists is not always the original port and Ancestry.com lists Glasgow. Bristol makes sense as a port since the Donague family was travelling from Glamorgan, Wales. I have found one small note in the The Bristol Mirror 21 Jan 1854 under Ship News that says "at New York, the Eagle, Quance" arrived.

Where else can I look for information on this voyage and the family's immigration records?
I'm curious about this trip because most of the family ended up back in England shortly after.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm interested in this immigration because it looks like Michael & Gwenllian Donague with their younger children Jane, Ellen, Charlotte & Thomas went to New York in 1853. Michael and Gwenllian as well as at least Ellen and Thomas were back in England for the 1861 Census.

- Jane emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria in 1865 from Liverpool so she must have went back to England at some point.

- Ellen went back to England but eventually ended up marrying George Wentz in New York in 1894. And lived with her sister Charlotte before her death there in 1902.

- Charlotte married to Malachi Byrnes in New Jersey in Oct 1870, but I haven't been able to locate her in the England census or the USA censuses in-between yet so not sure if she stayed in the USA or went back to England. The 1900 US Census lists her immigration year as 1878 but the 1910 US Census lists her immigration year as 1858, so it’s a bit contradictory at the moment, still looking.

I've also lost Gwenllian Donague in the 1871 England Census, she should be in theory in Kingsholm, Gloucestershire on Kingsholm Square/Edwy Parade, the family had houses there in the 1861 Census and she died there in Dec 1878, but the houses are occupied by someone else in 1871. I'm currently working on the theory that she might have went to US with her daughter Charlotte in 1870 and stayed for a little while, I haven't found her yet though.

I haven't found any of their return trips (US->UK or back to UK->US) yet so any help locating those would be much appreciated:
Michael & Gwenllian Donague and their children Jane, Ellen, Charlotte & Thomas

Thanks in advance for any help!

Lee

The passenger list is here:

It is unlikely that there are any surviving records into the UK for that time period.

Jane DONAGUE's brother and sister- in- law were on the same voyage to Australia in 1865
So all travelling together.
It seems, by the original passenger list to US, that William was not with the rest of the family on that trip.

Do you know where and when he married?

Perhaps knowing his movements might help with tracking others of the family including Jane
