19thC Trade Directories and women
« on: Friday 22 September 23 09:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help with the following question, please?

I have a page from the 1824-5 Baines Trade Directory (if anyone can point me at the full document that'd be lovely), covering Todmorden. It predominantly lists men in the Directory part, but with the occasional woman - like my relative, "*Lee Mrs. Susan, Millwood" (page 566 I think).

Does the fact that she's listed and not her husband Thomas mean that he was dead, or that he was listed elswhere as a business?

Thomas was a corn miller. The * before her name means she was resident in Stansfield.

At the top of the page it says "Consisting of the Inhabitants not arranged in the Trade's List, with the Residence of the Gentry, Clergy, and Manufacturers." So what would her status be, please?

Many thanks for any help  :)
HAY - Aberdeen, Shetland, etc.
LEE - Todmorden, etc.
BELSHAW - Farnworth, Bolton, Wigan, Manchester, etc.
ALLINSON - Pontefract, Leeds, etc.
UPWARD - Isle of Wight

I can't really help in whether her husband was still alive, however I would guess she is listed separately as she is on her own.  :-\  She is also listed in "Directory of the Borough of Leeds, the City of York, and the clothing district of Yorkshire...together with upwards of 500 manufacturing and other villages and hamlets"
Author Parson, William White, William
Publication Date 1830

The same description appears at the top of the list " "Consisting of the Inhabitants not arranged in the Trade's List, with the Residence of the Gentry, Clergy, and Manufacturers.", and again a "2" indicating Stansfield.

There is also a Mary LEE of Millwood listed under shopkeepers.

I can view the directory using my Australian National Library card and their  eresources which includes Gale Primary Sources. Many libraries around the globe have similar access - perhaps you could try your local?

I had checked Historical Directories for Todmorden. Not listed in this 1822 Directory - pages 622 - 625.
