Allan MacLeod & Isabella Macdonald + family located in Dingwall, Ross-shire

I have been trying without success to find Allan MacLeod's parents via his death cert.  Unfortunately, I cannot find where he died.

Allan was born in about 1816 out of county.  He married Isabella Macdonald or Mc Donald (born about 1820) in 13 Nov 1837 in Inverness.  They had a family Margaret 23 Jul 1838, Donald 16 Mar 1840 in Inverness, John Rose 15 Apr 1842 in Dingwall, Alexander about 1845 in Dingwall, Allan about 1847 in Dingwall, Hector about 1849 in Dingwall, Ann Macaulay on 21 May 1855 in Dingwall.  Ann died in 1856 in Dingwall.  This means both parents were alive post 1855.

The 1851 census has the family except for Allan senior in Dingwall.  Isabella is noted being born in Inver, Inverness and occupation as "Painters wife abroad".

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the birth certificate for Ann Macaulay McLeod on 21 May 1855 in Dingwall?
As it is record from 1855 it will probably contain extra information on her parents than on normal certificates, which could be helpful.

Have you missed a child ? – Isabella born 1852 Dingwall

In the 1861 census, there is Isabella (9) and her brother Allan (14) - Both paupers, living with Ann Innes in Mill Street Dingwall.


Have you looked at the mother - Isabella’s death record? What does it say about her husband? Or was she a widow?

I was wondering whether Findmypast.com 3-month subscription might $89.99 provide me with all the census data transcribed but I am not sure how it handles BMD certificates.  How does it compare to Scotland's People, which I have used almost exclusively, to obtain copies of BMD certificates?

Each certificate has cost me about $2.50 so I would need 36 equivalents from Findmypast to make it worthwhile but it would allow me to gather information about all the McLeod families in Ross & Cromarty and their diaspora more rapidly than I have but slow is good because I enter the info into my own genealogy database.  I would still get stuck but less often.

I also can go the the Public Library where they have on-site access to Ancestry Library Edition every 3 weeks or so.  But don't think this edition covers BMD certs.

Anyone have any comments?

The ONLY place you can get original BMD certificates and original census records is from Scotlands People.
Ancestry and FindMyPast have transcriptions of census records - and the transcriptions can have errors. As you say, you can access these from the library.
