Joel or Joseph Rowland?
« on: Sunday 24 September 23 15:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm having trouble working out whether my ancestor was born to a Joel or Joseph Rowland in Upottery in 1810. The Baptism is 22 Apr 1810 to Joel and Elizabeth Rowland. Joel lists himself as such everywhere apart from in the 1841 census, where he is named as Joseph. In the 1851/61 censuses he states his DoB as 1769. There is a Joseph Rowland baptised to James and Mary in Upottery on this date, but also to the same couple in 1778. There is a death on GRO for Joseph Rowland in Honiton 1862 which seems to match, which lists him as 100 - and there is a Joel Rowland born in Upottery in 1763!

Anyway, I'm just a bit confused and more so because I have two DNA matches who trace themselves back to Joseph (1769/78's) parents. One I'm not so sure of but the other seems to check out (through James Rowland 1761 through to Francis Rowland 1881), which adds to my confusion!

Any help appreciated. I'm aware there's also a Joseph Rowland born to Abel and Eleanor in 1811, which I hope I've ruled out through DNA.

The 1841 you have quoted has Elizabeth as '40', she would have been very young to have a child in 1810 though not impossible.  In 1851 she is age 51 so born c 1800

The 1841 census you have quoted has these children

ROWLAND, ANNA       mmn HARDING
GRO Reference: 1838  M Quarter in HONITON  Volume 10  Page 118

ROWLAND, LOUISA       mmn HARDING
GRO Reference: 1839  S Quarter in HONITON  Volume 10  Page 104

If this 1841 census you have quoted is the correct father for your Joseph born 1810 then I suspect that he had remarried and the children showing on the census are from a 2nd marriage.  A Joseph Rowland married Elizabeth Harding at Luppitt on 6th November 1825.  Do you have a burial for his first wife.

Hi all,

In 1851 Chard, Somerset there is a Joseph Rowland born in Upottery and is a widower, Is this your Joseph

One of the children who appear on census with him

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have Joseph down as marrying Elizabeth Harding in 1825 as above and him marrying Elizabeth Rowland (b. 1772) in 1801.

I haven't got him down in the Chard census, I have him in Luppitt with family:

Joel Rowland   81
Elizabeth Rowland   51
Anna Rowland   12
Louisa Rowland   9
Jane Rowland   4
Francis Rowland   1

Best wishes
