Struggling to find family
« on: Sunday 24 September 23 22:32 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I can't seem to be able to find this family before 1939 (other than the mother in 1911); have tried both FindMyPast and A**y.   I wonder if someone could have a look for me as I'm running out of spellings / options ???   Here they are

TYDDYN PERTHI, GWYRFAI, (Nebo/Carmel area)
Richard Thomas 22/12/1892 Quarryman
Catherine Thomas (nee Jones) 30/05/1895 Home duties
Idwal Thomas 23/05/1917 Quarryman
Elfed M Thomas 26/06/1918 Quarryman
Nancy M Thomas (then Walters) 16/12/1920 Waitress

This info is from the 1939 (I hope I can publish if not please mods please let me know and I will amend. )

I know they didn't move from the area and had several other children after 1922 but they are redacted in 1939 so I need to go through births, etc which takes some time so  I haven't recorded in my tree yet...but nothing seems to come up for the older ones.  I'm going to go through electoral registers now to see what comes up.

If someone fancies having a look around please do.

Thank you for looking
Nesta

Nancy M Thomas (then Walters) 16/12/1920 Waitress

I think that should probably be 16 Dec 1919 and then the birth was registered in 1920.

That is a long way from Caernarvonshire!
It looks like they married in Pontypridd as well. 2nd quarter 1916, ref 11a 1149.

Looking at census there is this Thomas family in same area that your couple settled.

A number of trees have the family but don't know if there are errors.  There is a brother called Idwal (maybe coincidence) and it seems that 2 other brothers of Richard settled in the Glamorgan area. Maybe all came for work and Richard returned with family.

Guess you would need Richard & Catherine marriage to see if his possible named father is Evan.

A number of my relatives moved from Caernarfonshire to the same area to work in the mines and some moved back again.

The 1921 census has, as transcribed:-
Richard Thomas 1893 Caernarvonshire
Catherine 1896 Caernarvonshire
Idwal 1917 Pontypridd, Glamorganshire
Ewed (Elfed) Meirion 1918 Pontypridd, Glamorganshire
Nancy Mildred 1920 Pontypridd, Glamorganshire

A tree on Ancestry has Richard born 22 DEC 1891 in Penygroes, Caernarvonshire
Another has Catherine born on 20 MAY 1895 in Llandwrog, Caernarvonshire, with a photographs of her, her father, John Griffith Jones, and grandfather, Griffith Jones. That side of the family back to 1759-1765. Also photos of Catherine's siblings.

Nobody seems to have details of Richard or the marriage, although there is one in Pontypridd in April-June 1916.

There is this possible birth reg. If he was born late Dec likely registered early 1892

THOMAS, RICHARD  mmn  GRIFFITH
GRO Reference: 1892  M Quarter in CARNARVON  Volume 11B  Page 368

Added: some of the 1939 redacted children on this tree. Not checked MMN

My husband's great grandfather was born in Caernarfonshire sometime in the late 1890s (dates vary) but married in  Pontypridd in 1909, so I guess there was a lot of movement for work (he was a collier). Sadly as he was William Williams, father William Williams (deceased), I've not been able to trace him further back.

Just hopped on to see my replies.   Thank you all so much for your help.

At work so I don't have much opportunity to go through them all but will do so when I get home.
