confirmation of translation (German)
« on: Monday 25 September 23 10:29 BST (UK) »
Just checking that I have this correct please. In the baptism top of page, on 1 Nov 1758 is one of the testes described as Jungfrau Maria Anna the daughter of the forester Franz Josef Ballan of Tätschen (Tetschen) .
Was there a minimum age that someone could stand as a witness at a baptism ? Trying to work out a rough age for Maria. She had siblings born about 1742-51.
Thanks

This link is good.
Your translation is correct.
Jungfer Maria Anna, des Herrn Frantz Joseph Ballan Forstmeister in Tätschen eheliche Jungfer Tochter

To answer your question: I don't know the minimum age to act as witness. I tried to find from what age a girl was called jungfer, but didn't find anything yet. I'll continue my search tomorrow.

(but if I had to guess: a minimum age of 10 years)

Anna Maria was witness, not godmother. Godmothers had to be at least 7 years, although younger ones seemed to have existed. Maybe these were only witnesses.
I found this information below:
https://forum.ahnenforschung.net/archive/index.php/t-13570.html
Marlies, 25.10.2007, 09:03

In your case: Maria Anna could have been younger than 7 years.

Thanks for that. I am surprised that even a witnesses could be so young. I would think she would probably have had her first communion though, so I will go with 7 or over.
