Owen Wren - about 1841
« on: Monday 25 September 23 13:34 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to track down more information around Owen Wren born 1841 in Roscommon, Ireland.

I know his father is called Stephen Wren as this is on his marriage cert (8th Sep 1866, Halifax), but do not know much else about him.

Does anyone know how I can find more information around his birth and his parents?

Thanks
Sam

Welcome.  :)

I struggled to find anything meaningful on this, though I did wonder if the surname Wren could possibly have alternated as Warren, for the Tithe Applotment Books show a Stephen Warren in the townland of Drumlish in the civil parish of Clooncraff (1842):

Drumlish: https://www.townlands.ie/roscommon/roscommon/clooncraff/creeve/drumlish/

Aughrim RC parish registers (same vicinity) show a Stephen Warren marrying a Maria McDermott on 11 December 1834, witnessed by John Brennan and Eleanor McGowan (right page, 4 entries up from bottom):

But other than these couple of Warren references, that was it. Hopefully other eyes will find something for you.

Owen's mother being called Margaret in that 1871 census scuppers the 'Warren' folk in my previous post... I hadn't thought of 'Ring' as a surname alternative.

But in the light of that new information, what about the following marriage on 11 August 1836, in Kilronan RC parish, up to the north end of Roscommon and near the county borders with Leitrim and Sligo, it's for a Stephen 'Rynn' and Margaret Early, the witnesses were Peter Early and Catharine McDermott (left page, 4th entry down):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632369#page/7/mode/1up

Just a possibility.

A good possible Gaffy...

When searching hints for me also came up with 'Ryan'

I can't see 'Owen' per se, but I can see a son 'John' baptised in Kilronan RC parish on 8 January 1845 for Stephen Rynn and Margaret Early, the witnesses were Patrick and Margaret Matimore(?):

Gaffy - Not sure if that would connect as age/name out.

Sam - could you give witness names...addresses and fathers occ from marriage cert it may help. Was Stephen marked as deceased?

Hi Cas,

I am finding it difficult to read the marriage cert as the hand writing isn't very clear.

from what I can make our, Stephen Wren his father, was deceased at time of marriage (8th Sep 1866) He was a labourer.

Many thanks!
