Help finding the death of a Margaret Semple
« on: Monday 25 September 23 19:13 BST (UK) »
I am hoping someone will be able to find a death that is evading me! I am looking for the death of Margaret Semple born 1822 in Strathaven to William Manwell & Margaret Hamilton. She married William Semple 4 Jan 1840 Avondale and I have tracked them through all the census returns till Williams death in 1884. Margaret then appears on the 1891 Census with a grand daughter in Green Street, Strathaven but then not seen on the 1901 census. I can't find a further marriage or a death for  her! HELP! :-)

Have you considered this death?

Margaret Semple Age at Death 73 Avondale RD Ref 621/36 1896

Other name at this ref is Margaret Manuel - this seems remarkably close to Manwell! Downside from the information given is Mother's Maiden Name showing in index as Young. Do bear in mind that accuracy  might depend on the informant's knowledge.

It might be worth obtaining this cert.

Hi William,
Many thanks for this..... I had seen that one but discounted it because of the name Young - but never really considered it might be an error or as you say - dependent on the informant etc. I took a punt and having looked at it in more detail, it is the right one! All the details apart from the name young are correct!!
A mystery solved - thanks for the push to look at it again - much appreciated!!
Cheers
Rob

I note the likely death of Margaret’s mother and maybe two siblings, did William remarry?

MAXWELL   MARGREAT HAMILTON / WILLIAM MAXWELL   04/07/1834   AVONDALE

MAXWELL   WALTER   WILLIAM MAXWELL      03/01/1834   AVONDALE

MAXWELL   JANET   WILLIAM MAXWELL      20/10/1835   AVONDALE

I do not see any Maxwell's on the 1841/1851 census in Avondale.
