WW1 personal effects list look up and decipher help please
« on: Tuesday 26 September 23 15:44 BST (UK) »
My Great Uncle William Prince died on 14.12.1917 in France. His cause of death was listed as died of wounds on one record I found a couple of years ago but I've now been sent some information which shows he died of gas poisoning.
I was also sent a list of effects returned to his family some of which I can't decipher.
I wondered if anyone was able to take a look and see if they could transcribe the list please. I'm not sure I can post the image I was sent due to copyright.

Also I have effects of £22-0s-6d and
Quarter gratuity of £19-10s-0d for William. Would this be money he had saved plus a death payment from the army?  Would this have been sent to his parents?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

There are several people with that name who died in WW1 - where was he born please?

You can highlight and post a snippet of the word/s you can't decipher.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The £22 was Unclaimed Arny Pay and paid to his Father William
The £19  was War Gratuity paid based on his length of Service in the Arny to his Death also paid to his Father
That amount shows he Enlisted pre War
He went Overseas on 9 September 1914 as a Lance Corporal which confirms he was pre War Soldier

Killed in action & died of wounds were the 2 causes of death that
were recorded. Gas poisoning was classed as a wound.
It was just to differentiate between men who were killed almost immediately
& those that died a day or more later in a CCS.
However the Soldiers Effects Register states KIA.
This is incorrect as they were in reserve at that time.
The last action they were involved in was in November & they did suffer gas casualties.
Can you tell us the source of your information re. his injury?
As an aside his service number indicates he attested in 1911.

Hi, thanks for the replies.
William Prince was born in Leicester in 1893 to William Prince and Annie (nee Merrick)

Thanks for the explanation about the pay. I thought his father may have had the money but Annie got her own back on him and his bigamous or common law wifewhen he passed away.

I tried to post an image of his list of personal effects that someone sent me but it just loads as gobbledegook. I think it came from one of the two main fhsites. As im having to research from a phone im struggling to decipher anything that doesnt have thw transcribed details with it.

No worries, he did die of wounds & probably gas.
He was between Flesquieres & Marcoing France
occupying the Hindenburg support trench.

Thanks. Again for the information. Could I be really cheeky and ask if this means Great uncle William was prpbably gassed in November and lived on until 14th December?
Also, is a CCS a field station hospital?
