Hi Mabel,
Many thanks for your message.

The 1841 census information suggests that as the 1841 census was taken on 6th June 1841. The husband of Ann Frances Le Bas must have been around in early 1840 for William Henry Lebas to be aged 7 months on the 6th June 1841, but is certainly not present in the 1841 census.

That certainly narrows doen the date of his disappearance; unless ...........

I'd been looking to see if Lovell could have been with grandparents and found a baptism in Rotherhithe for Ann Frances 29 May 1812 daughter of James & Frances Ford. Other children to the same parents
Lovell Pilter born 9 Sept 1813  James noted as boat builder and living in Thames Street
William Barton bp 28 Feb 1817 born Dec 1816 living in Trinity Street

Possible burial 4 July 1820 Wesleyan Chapel, Deptford Frances Ford 29 of Rotherhithe.

Marriage Rotherhithe 29 June 1811 James Ford & Frances Barton

There's a record for William Barton Ford in 1825 from Reed's School in Cobham which notes that he has neither father nor mother, father was a master boat builder and died in an earthquake in South America leaving 3 children unprovided for.

So no grandparents on that side.

It was not unusual for a woman to say she was widowed if her husband had left her.  There are quite a few places that are not covered by the 1861 census as they were lost or destroyed.

Rate Books for St Margaret Westminster 1840-1843 Ferdinand E Le Bas is listed at Stafford Place
Ref: ancestry
The same address of the 1841 census.

So he was around until 1843- or when the data was collected for printing the 1843 edition.
