Gunters of Berkshirre

I have lots of information on the Gunters going back to Wales but I cannot find where this John Gunter came from, his date of birth or anything else about him.

John Gunter had two children Thomas Gunter 21 August 1631, Anne Gunter 2 September 1641 both born in Hungerford, Berkshire.

Many thanks in anticipation of any leads for him.

My initial thoughts when I saw the surname was that it could be the Germanic surname of GUNTHER and if so an ancestor could have arrived in Britain with the HESSIAN Army and stayed when he left the army, or the ancestor arrived in Wales to organise trade between Wales and The British "Kingdom of Hanover" on mainland Europe.   This mainland European population were mainly Ev. Lutheran Religion with a sprinkling of Catholics.   

Maybe an early Trade Directory or Post Office Directory might show  the surname.

I once read that there was a travelling musical Gunther family, Wales and music are well known - so did your ancestor stay behind and join a Welsh choir?

The naming custom was similar to the British naming pattern.  The child usually having several given names, but the child's name was the one next to his surname.' and other given names being witnesses at the baptism who were either relatives of the baby or persons who could give the child employment when it was old enough.

It's a shame that the ancestor only had two children, the boy child would probably have been given his paternal grandfather's name and with luck could also have been given some names of other maternal  and paternal relatives.  Similarly with the little girl, she could also be carrying the name of her paternal grandmother as well as the name of her maternal grandmother.

Children usually carried their own name next to their surname and at least two other names being the names of the godparents.

So mad here as we had national elections yesterday with an enormous swing to the right and we are to the results.

Thank you all for your suggestions - he is not the one who emigrated to the States.
