Ovrbeth, Wales
« on: Wednesday 27 September 23 21:17 BST (UK) »
Kia ora

I have this place in my family tree but I cannot find it on a map, perhaps its name has changed?

Philip Gunter born 1400c Abergavenny, Wales, married Beata Hundeehage born 1400c Ovrbeth, Wales.  They had three children:  Mary Elizabeth Gunter, William Hunter/Henry Gunter 1420, John William of Abergavenny Gunter 1430-1470.
Philip Gunter died 1470, Wiltshire.

Any help appreciated

Have you got a reference to something that includes this name Ovrbeth?

I doubt a place name in Wales would start with "Over" and the ending "beth" could feasibly be bydd or bedd or fydd / fedd. There is a Treberfydd estate near Skenfrith and Llangasty Talyllyn. The poperty shown on the linked map was however built to replace an exisiting one in the 1800's   https://maps.nls.uk/view/101605487#zoom=3&lat=3529&lon=4752&layers=BT

Welsh spellings and placenames are tricky; although modern Welsh spelling is phonetic, older records, particularly those written by non-Welsh speakers, are often far from the modern spelling.
There's no letter 'v' in Welsh - the English 'v' sound is spelt with 'f' while the English 'f' sound is spelt 'ff' in Welsh. Abergavenny is Y Fenni in modern Welsh, historically Abergafenni. So I suspect Ovrbeth is in error somewhere. Where did you find this reference?

I will check tomorrow - I think it was in 'my Heritage' web site.

Many thanks for both of your responses.

I tried a bit of lateral thinking since we could be dealing with an ancient transcription error.
This is presumably an 'English' family since they are using surnames at such an early date. How about Narbeth? (Narberth, Pembrokeshire) Google describes it as a Norman stronghold. Although it is a bit far from Abergavenny the better off folk did get around more than ordinary people.

I have'nt much confidence in the wife's surname either as Google cannot find this word at all!

Just looked at My Heritage, as Bronwen suggests that that was the source. There is a list of trees giving similar information on Philip Gunter.    I've not found any  ref to Beata in them so far.

No sources given so far.  I'll report back when fully investigated them.

First mention of a wife!

Listed as Elizabeth Gethin. Philip now Gwylim 'Philip' Gunter. b. Aber 1415 and died Aber 1451.

Add - no ref to Beata.

Beata Hundeehage sounds Scandinavian or German to me and  refs to those with 'Hundehege' as a surname are all German.
