The trees I looked at had a Philip Gunter (1400 - 1470 in Abergavenny) marrying an Elizabeth Gethin. I dicsounted the German hint that you found, but assumed that someone had got their wires crossed.

There is a pedigree that names individuals similar to those in the one tree I looked at (if not the same individuals). although dates out a bit - which could be understandable. I don't know if Bronwen is looking for a German Gunter family, but I assume she is looking for an Abergavenny one, since that is what most others are listing (albeit with un-sourced facts cobbled together from the trees of others. as you said).

One article that lists a pedigree:https://journals.library.wales/view/1337678/1339467/29#?xywh=-455%2C333%2C2917%2C1872

I mentioned the marriage earlier, Sam. They are in some of the My Heritage trees that I found (Bronwen said that that was where she found the info). No mention of   Beata so I went to other online sites and found the Family Search and Ancestry refs and then followed on with other searches.

All in my posts.

Nothing in Nat Library so far but very early. I only have one line that goes back before that and a cousin had done much of the research before me and he got to Owain Glyndwr's sister.

I do have the early pedigrees in various publications but it takes ages to search through those.

Many thanks to you all for looking into this.  I have been on this website:
http://lastwelshmartyr.blogspot.com/2009/10/gunters-of-abergavenny.html
Which has this below.
I have more - but the lines are wide and convoluted but basically the lines I have follow like this
1070 - Peter Gunter of Tregunter, Brecknockshire
1100- William
1130 - William
1170 - Philip
1200 - William
1230 - John
1270 - Richard
1300 - Watkin married heiress of Gileston by Talybont
1330 -william of Gileston
Jenkin 'hen' of Gileston which line continued to 1700
1370 - William of Scethroc
1400 - Lewis
1430 - William
1470 - Watkin of Porth y Parc Abergavenny
1500 - James of Abergevenny Priory
1550 - Robert of the Priory
Walter of the Priory which line continued to 1750
1600 - Richard of Monk Street Abergevenny
1630 - Richard of Uske
1670 - Richard of Cross Street Abergevenny
1700 - James of Cross Street
Walter
James of 'Gunters' London
Robert whose line the Yorkshire gunters came to an end in the male line in 1980
1730 - James
1770 - William of Abergevenny
1800 - John Gunter of Fulham (1788-1856) - he had 4 sons John, William Edward and Howel
John had a son John William and his son Rolf was the end of this male line
William had a son Howel William Hector who had 3 sons had Geoffrey, Charles and Edward
Edward had a son Francis who's son Peter ended that male line
Howel had Oswald who was my Grandfather. My father Peter Cedric had two sons Peter Mark and Christopher Howel.
Peter Mark has a son Jamie and Christopher Howel as a son David Gunter.

It is the Abergavenny line I was following part of which I understood moved into the Berkshire line.
Clearly the woman Beata Hundeehage born 1400c Ovrbeth, needs to be removed.

Attached is what I have without looking at everything I have picked up and that you have advised me of.  The biggest problem is that I have been unable to marry up the Gunter born in 1631, in Hungerford with the previous Gunters so I could quite possibly be barking up entirely the wrong tree.

And I see somewhere there are Gunters going back to 1470 in Hungerford, so that might be my lot.

Thanks for the tree from Gwent local history journal. another thing to look at.

This is all very much appreciated.

So no Ovrbeth then!

Bronwen, you say:

Who is the earliest Gunter that you can verify in you line?

Yes that is where I began, and the wills fortunately help me to ascertain that I am correct in this.  I don't have any earlier wills for the gunters.

I do have Gentleman John's parents, but no absolute proof.
Jeffrey George Gunter 1501 Milton, Wiltshire married Agnes Yale (1500c) and they had nine children: #Bryan Gunter 1523c–November 1628, Symon Gunter 1523c–1587c (m.Alice Platt), Edward Axford Gunter 1523c– 1530c, Humphrey Gunter 1523c-1530, Ellen Gunter 1523c–1530c, Elizabeth Gunter 1523c–1540c (m.Robert Hitchman), Jane Gunter 1531/1540 (m.John Hellier c.Lucy Hellier, Mary Hellier, Ursula Hellier, Anne Hellier, John Hellier, Robert Hellier, Charles Hellier), Gentleman John Gunter 1534c, Symon Gunter 1537c-1587c.  All registered in Kintbury, Berkshire.
Agnes Gunter (Yale) died 1542 Wiltshire
Jeffrey George Gunter died 1557

I do have information on the various families that they married into, the main line that is for me.

I do look at Wiki Tree to try and establish the correct information.

Many thanks for all your help it is much appreciated.
