John Gwennap Hume -- an Indian Army officer in Van Diemen's Land 1839
« on: Thursday 28 September 23 17:12 BST (UK) »
A simple question -- what would he be doing there? He got married there, apparently, although I haven't been able to find the marriage to see for myself, to Annette Moore on 14 February 1839. Can anyone suggest an answer? I believe he was serving with the 10th Native Infantry at the time, for the East India Company of course at this date.
Condick; Bull (Herefordshire only); Layard; Wilmot; Southgate; Fowlie (Singapore branch); Usher (Dundrum); Kelley (Lancashire);

Five minutes later I've found the marriage record, and yes, he was a captain in the Native Infantry!But why was he there??

Van Diemen's Land had British regiments on a rotating roster to protect against claims to the island by French explorers and to quell native uprising.

The registration of the marriage as shown on the Tasmanian Names Index says he was a Captain 'in the Bombay Army'

His application to join the "Bombay Infantry", 1819, nominated by one of the East India Company Directors, can be viewed at FindMyPast.
