Thank you all very much!! I didn't know that there were regular forces sent to keep Tasmania secure. Thank you for the marriage announcements (and Annette's father's name) and a special thanks to Shaun who as always goes that step further in finding information. Cannot imagine why a East India Company officer was able to give evidence about catarrh in sheep! He grew up in London where his father was an apothecary and respected scientist.

From the National Archives of India:

"Captain J.G. Hume of the 10th Regiment Native Infantry is allowed to proceed to New South Wales with leave of absence for two years. " (General Orders, 1837)

OK Shaun now you've thrown me. I was happily proceeding with the idea that his regiment was on a tour of duty but in fact he went off by himself! I wonder whether he was thinking of possibly emigrating? It appears from earlier contributions to this thread that that was seen as quite an attractive option at the time.
I should add that GWH is a paragraph at most in what I'm doing but I am intrigued!

Thank you again!

Ah! I hadn't realised it was only HM forces that did that. Duh.

Shaun,
What a good find.
I was going to post that he wouldn't be there in a military capacity. The East India forces didn't come under the Crown til 1858. The 51st Regiment of Foot were in Tasmania from early 1838 through 1839..
