Ann Millns Yorkshire/Nottinghamshire
« on: Friday 29 September 23 13:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for anything that might help with confirmation on info that I have on an Ann Millns, born around 1824.

My direct line has Abraham Jackson marrying Ann Millns in Rotherham, July 1853. His age was 33 (1820) and hers 29 (1824).

Both Abraham and Ann's residence was shown as Masbro (small place very close to Rotherham). Ann's father was given as Thomas Milnes, a labourer.

Later census information lists Ann's place of birth as Carlton, Nottinghamshire (I think probably Carlton in Lindrick). I can find one person of that name, but the baptism is 1822, with father Thomas and mother Hannah.

Thomas and Hannah were living in Harworth in 1841 and then Tickhill in 1851. Ann was not in their household in 1841 or 1851, leading up to her marriage in 1853.

I need to try and confirm that Ann did come from those parents / that family. Whilst her father's occupation on the 1851 census is 'Ag Labourer', the birth/baptism record is a couple of year's out.

It would have helped if Ann would have been with them in 1851.

Yes, saw that. Assume it's a mis-type / mis-sounding. I've seen all sorts of spellings for Millns so far. Millns, Milnes, Mills, Millus, Milner....the list goes on.

I just cannot find Ann on the 1841 or 1851 census.

I do see the name Susannah in the family of Ann's assumed mother Hannah, so I'm hopeful that I haven't got it wrong.

It's the age on the marriage record that has thrown it

I'll check that entry Carole, thanks. How do I search by folio number, etc?

EDIT. Found it. That's a really good find and explains why I couldn't find her locally. That's a long way from Rotherham, where she gets married 2 years later. 'Carton' has to be Carlton. Wonder if she is there in 1841 also

There is an 1838 marriage in Notts between John Lowther & Maria Milnes.  Maria Lowther is 40 in 1841 but there are 5 Milnes children in same household one of whom is a 15yr old Ann

Ann would have been around 18 in 1841 but ages from16 upwards were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs
