Thank you; definitely not Elgar, even without all your hard work! Someone on another forum suggested Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, and there is a certain likeness, but I think the mouth is wrong.
I've also looked at the name, Townsend (coach builders of Derby), on the site you link to, as my grandmother has other memorabilia connected to the family, but I drew a blank there, also.

Reminds me of William (Wilhelm) Schlich, but the face shape seems different

That's a possibility!
This is a link to the National Portrait gallery pic of him in 1921. He was younger in my photo, but there are similarities.

And here is a link to an earlier photo:

The eyes especially, the chin and ears are the features that stand out as very similar across the portraits. Not sure about the cheekbones and length of the face, but these can look different depending on lighting and photo angle.

I would say not, the carriage of the head doesn't,
Just my thoughts.

I've flipped the image of the unknown gentleman to better line them up but I think it's pretty clear when they're side by side that most of their respective features don't match.
Peter

That it pretty conclusive Peter, although the ears grow with age, the structure doesn't alter.
It can't be him.

I've put 3 pics of William (Wilhelm) Schlich, at various ages, together. Could they be the same person?
