Bernard Murray b. 1875 Omagh
« on: Sunday 01 October 23 19:05 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I am searching for the birth record or any confirmation of the birth of Bernard Murray, in his naval records he states he was born on 18th February 1875 in Omagh County Tyrone and joined the Royal Navy in 1894, at the time of the 1901 Census he is aboard ship in Devonport

On his marriage certificate, from 1902, Greenock Scotland he states his father as Michael Murray, Railway Porter and his mother as Elizabeth Morrison.

The trouble is I can not confirm any birth record for him or any details on his parents other than those recorded in his marriage record

Any help appreciated

Looking at the GRONI website, there was no-one named Murray born on 18th Feb 1875 anywhere in what is now Northern Ireland. So that place and date seem a little questionable. (He may have adjusted it to suit naval recruitment age rules). And I don’t see any children born to Michael Murray and Elizabeth Morrison in the 1870s. Nearest is this in Ballymena where the mother was Mary Morrison. Fathers occupation ragman. Not a railway occupation.

Were Michael & Elizabeth deceased, according to that 1902 marriage cert?

Thanks Elwyn,
I did try multiple combinations and widened search criteria but turned up blank, on various databases, closest I found was a Bernard Murray born in 1878 address Fountain Street, Londonderry, his father was recorded as a seaman but mothers maiden name didn't fit or for that matter father's occupation. According to his granddaughter the family legend was he was born at sea. All a bit confusing unfortunately.

Hello joemc

i've got a couple of queries:

On the marriage certificate is Bernard Murray's father noted as being deceased?

What were the names of the children of Bernard Murray?

On the marriage certificate is Bernard Murray's father noted as being deceased?

Marriage cert does not show that either parent is deceased.

Thanks all

Yes the marriage Cert does not indicate that either parent is deceased although it does mention the fact that the brides father is deceased so I am thinking they were both still alive or maybe he didn't know.

Looks like without further concrete information this will remain a mystery

Thanks everyone for the input

The 1911 census (suggested above) will give you more information about his place of birth.

Hi Neale,

He states in his Military records that he was born in Omagh, County Tyrone Ireland in 1875, I don't think the census record will give me any further information, I suspect it will just state he was born in Ireland
