Old Swinford Grave
« on: Sunday 01 October 23 23:48 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone I have found two relatives, Obadiah & Rebecca Skidmore and a gravestone on an online site but I cannot read the words other than their names. The stone is at St Mary's Church. I wondered if anyone living nearby may be able to get a better picture or tell me what is said on the two stones please?
Many thanks, Luke

I had hoped to add the image as I have it but the option for adding attachments doesnt seem to be working.

Hi
I've had a look at Find A Grave .com.It looks like a double gravestone if I have the right one.
Right hand side
In Memory
of Mary ********
and Rebecca ****
April 30 17 ** aged *7years
Also Obadiah Skidmore died
Dec 2nd 1793 aged 51 years
Blessed be God who thought it fit
I should be killed in a coal pit
so as I dreamed it provident? **  **
For unto Christ *** **** _____
Also Rebecca his wife
Died October 5th 1815
Aged 69 years
 Left hand side.
In Memory
of  *eo *****(George?)
who died  May 5 1806
Aged 8?8  years
Eleanor Cooper mother of
the above Jane Skidmore
departed this life June
5 1844 aged 80 years

The top of the stone has weathered badly

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/209577097/allo-obadiali-skidmore#view-photo=203104689

I saved it and then zoomed in but some bits have just gone

Interesting about the coal pit though

Obadiah and Rebecca married in 1768 and they had a daughter Mary 1771 and Rebecca 1782 so they are probably the first two mentioned.

Wonderful stuff Ciderdrinker, perhaps there is a local record for the accident.

How did you find Mary and Rebecca's births?

Thanks, Luke

Hello again
Obadiah and Rebecca were baptising their children at Old Swinford

George 23 April 1769-23 Feb 1834 age 64
Mary bapt 23 June 1771 perhaps buried 3 May 1788 age 16
Obadiah 4 April 1773
Obadiah 23 April 1775-20 June 1819 age 44
Francis 18 may 1777 -10.4.1839 age 63
Margaret 25 Dec 1778
Frederick 24 Dec 1780
Rebecca 14 Nov 1782
Esther 5 Mar 1786

Not finding a burial for Rebecca junior, but then I can't find one for their first son Obadiah either and he must have died early on.
