Bray - Thorburn Marriage
« on: Monday 02 October 23 23:20 BST (UK) »
Been a while since I used SP as don't have much research in Scotland...forgot my password

Can SKP look up a marriage registration for Rebecca Bray b1872 and Alex Thorburn bc1869 after 1891 - 1901

1891 she is with family living Dalziel Motherwell Lanark. Cannot locate in 1901 but there is a poor law recording Nov 1911 asking for relief states husband died 24 Sept 1910/11 and has 2 children William Thornburn age 10 in 1911 and George age 5 months or weeks, hard to make out?

Know who her parents are just looking for BMD registration dates to tidy up family.

Thanks if you can help

From the SP Index

REBECCA BRAY/ ALEXANDER THORBURN 1897 639 / 153  Dalziel

No Alexander Thorburn death in 1910 - could he have been a seaman & died at sea?

Thanks for the marriage date Carole.

Is that a death? On the poor law relief dated Nov 1911 he is age 42 died 24 Sept previous year. States Alex Thorburn.

Added - Reread states Sept last which would be 1911 death correct, my error.

Extracts from the burial records of Dalziel parish cemetery, otherwise known as the Globe cemetery, Motherwell. All dates are of interment.

Five interments for plot ED 116.

ALFRED JAMES THORBURN, 42 Pollock Street, aged 11 years.
Parents - Alexander Thorburn & Rebecca Bray.
Interred 27th October 1906.

REBECCA THORBURN, Findlay's Buildings, Parkneuk, aged 2 years.
Parents - Alexander Thorburn & Rebecca Bray.
Interred 18th May 1908.

ALEXANDER THORBURN, ironworker, 42 Pollock Street, aged 42 years, married.
Parents - Alexander Thorburn & Margaret Simpson.
Interred 26th September 1911.

REBECCA BRAY or THORBURN, housewife, 42 Pollock Street, aged 55 years, widowed.
Parents - Josiah Bray & Mary Ann Williams.
Interred 18th January 1926.

MARY ANN WILLIAMSON BRAY, 42 Pollock Street, aged 59 years, widowed.
Parents - James Williamson & Martha Dumble.
Interred 20th March 1905.

Looks like there is a dispute with Mary Ann's surname, Williams or Williamson? Scotlandspeople has it as Williams and her mother's maiden surname as Dunble.
Parkneuk and Pollock Street are both in Motherwell.

One finale interment -

JOSEPH THORBURN, 17 Parkhead Street (Motherwell) aged 18 months.
Parents - Alexander Thorburn & Rebecca Bray.
Interred in plot 38 K. 26th January 1900.

This plot 38 K was owned by a family named Little. There is another plot owned by Andrew Little and his wife Margaret Thorburn. If you'd like the details for this family just let me know.
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

Here is an interesting monumental inscription from South Dalziel Parish Churchyard, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell.

"William Baird died at Valparaiso 24th April 1878 aged 32 years, his wife Agnes Coke died 17th March 1881 aged 36 years. Her two nieces, Margaret Thorburn died 8th December 1880 aged 8 months and Mary Thorburn died 5th November 1881 aged 8 weeks".

Could the father of these 2 girls be a brother of Alexander? According to Scotlandspeople, their mother's maiden surname was Coke. Again, according to SP, there was a marriage in Bothwell parish in 1878 between John Thorburn and Helen Coke.

Thank you very much for this info, appreciated. Lot of tradegy in Rebecca family.

I wondered if there were further children to couple. The Bray line is mine, thank you for the offer but Little family is not my DNA.

I wonder when time, if you have any burial details of Joseph Bray b 1844 died 1893 Dalziel (Father of Rebecca, husband of Mary Ann Bray nee Williams)

1891 for family
80 Windmillhill St, Dalziel
Joseph Bray   45

Josiah Bray   21 died 1928 Ayrshire

William Bray   14
John Bray   12
