Perhaps Michael was previously a soldier then at some stage.

Thank you all by the way, this is all really helpful.

British Army Worldwide Index 1841 has these two entries (I only have the index)

Michael O'Dea
Service no. 531
Private, Royal Newfountland (sic) Veteran Companies

Michael O'Dea

Possibly Matilda's birth
ODDIE, MATILDA       -
GRO Reference: 1847  D Quarter in MANCHESTER  Volume 20  Page 561

In addition to the dash on the GRO site, Lancashire BMD gives mother's maiden name as Oddie. So probably Michael is not on the certificate.

The Index for Army Records is on FindMyPast.

The records themselves are held at the National Archives

British Army Worldwide Index 1841

The first entry where his number is 531  is ref: WO 12/11214 - National Archives

The second entry is ref: WO 12/8983  - National Archives

Your Michael O'Dea was not in the military when he married at least not indicated on his marriage certificate.
