Bagshaw Wood,Sheffield
« on: Wednesday 04 October 23 22:47 BST (UK) »
Bagshaw Wood is named in court reports regarding a case in what is now Sheffield in 1825, and I'm trying to find out where it was (it doesn't seem to exist now, or at least not by that name).

The court reports describe a person travelling on foot from Sheffield to Beauchief (at that time in Derbyshire). I think that the incident took place in what is now Abbey Lane or Hutcliff cemetery in Beauchief, so Bagshaw Woods were probably to the north (ish) of there; but to complicate matters, the Bagshaws were landowners at Norton/Meadowhead, a mile or two to the southeast.

The area is still quite wooded but none of the current woods are called Bagshaw (Hutcliffe and Marriot are the closest woods to the northwest that still seem to be known by specific names, and Chancet wood is to the southeast).

I'm looking on the OS maps from the 1890s - does anyone have any access to any older maps that show Bagshaw Wood?

There is this map from 1828, though I can't see Bagshaw Wood. Fresh eyes might do better.

This 1791 map shows Bagshaw, Esq. presumably at Oaks Hall.

Hi
I think Bagshaw Wood could've well been in the Norton area of Sheffield.  I've lived in the area most of my life and haven't heard of these woods.
However, there is a pub built circa 1770 called the Bagshaw Arms (they do excellent food!) - address 'Norton Avenue Norton Sheffield S14 1BP'. It has an entry on Historic England.   It is also shown on a map I found on the Geneaologist - I think around 1840s.

The area around Norton is green and wooded and is near to Graves Park which is famous in the area.  Its a fair walk to Beauchief but back in the day they probably thought it wasn't.

Sheffield Libraries have an excellent archive - they may be able to help.

With acknowledgement to Picture Sheffield here's a photo of the pub.

The Bagshaw Arms shows on this 1883 map. Close to the Oaks. (Oaks Hall)

Thanks for responses.

It certainly would seem reasonable to suppose that Bagshaw Wood was out Norton way, where the Bagshaw family lived.

But in the court report it says that the person was walking from Sheffield to Beauchief and had come through Bagshaw Wood, and no way would Norton be en route between Sheffield and Beauchief. So it doesn't really make sense to me.

I hadn't thought of trying the archive at the Library so I'll maybe give them a call.

If I am looking at the same event (a newspaper snippet though), there is also mention of ‘Great Tom’s Cross field’.

That may be ‘Great Tom Cross’ perhaps. I looked the other day and found a lane with a similar name but it was another area of Sheffield, I think.

Have found a Bagshaw Wood now, in Ecclesfield. Not between Sheffield and Beauchief though, however my reading of the newspaper report doesn't say the girls were headed to Beauchief, only that they left Sheffield.  :-\
