Hearth Tax & earlier Tax records
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 01:55 BST (UK) »
Would anyone know if the Heath Tax for Dorset is online?  I've tried google but not found anything worthwhile.  The same for the Tudor Grant Subsidies of the 1500s.  I've finally found ancestors that far back and would like to flesh them out a bit.  I'm in Australia so going to my local library and finding them in book form is not available to me.
Many thanks

Available Hearth tax records are posted here:

https://gams.uni-graz.at/archive/objects/context:htx/methods/sdef:Context/get?mode=records

Dorset is not listed (nor on the Database format tab) unfortunately.
There was a list somewhere a couple of years ago listing the order in which they were transcribing the counties but I can't find it anymore.

Not terribly helpful, but Dorset Record Office does hold some documents relating to Hearth Tax for a small number of villages: https://archive-catalogue.dorsetcouncil.gov.uk/search/all:records/0_50/all/score_desc/Hearth%20tax

Hi
Some of the parish clerks for Dorset have done their parish.
So you could try looking on the opc website for the parish .
you may get lucky
Here's East Orchard
www.opcdorset.org/OrchardFiles/EastOrchard/EastOrchardHearthTax.htm

The Morman LDS also have it but not online ,only at their libraries.
The Tudor Subsidies are here

www.opcdorset.org/Miscellaneous/TudorSubsidyRolls.htm

I'm not sure if this will help you much in Oz, but there is (at least) one book:

C.F. Meekings (ed.), Dorset Hearth Tax, 1662-1664, Dorchester, 1951

They should have copies at the Dorset Record Office and British Library.  It is probably very scarce, though someone may have digitized it.

Watson. You may have missed the fact that the OP is in Australia, so can't get to Dorset Record Office or the British Library. Frankly I think you last suggestion may be the OP's best hope. However neither the Internet Archive's Open Library, Project Gutenberg or the Hathii Trust have digitized it so far.  Following on from Ciderdrinker's suggestion there's a DorsetOPC transcription of the  entries for Fontmell Magna here: http://www.opcdorset.org/FontmellMagnaFiles/FontmellMagnaDorsetHearthTax1664.pdf  Since they seem to have done the same for several other villages, it might be a good idea to google "[village name] hearth tax"

Thank you, but I didn't miss the fact that the poster is in Australia, as I referred to "Oz".

If he can't get the hearth tax searched any other way, he may have wanted to get someone to search the book for him at the Dorset Record Office or British Library.  At least, he has the option now that he knows about the book's existence.

It can be seen on FamilySearch
Helpfully they have moved the indexes to the beginning

Thank you everyone for your helpful replies and especially jonw65 for the link to the Hearth Tax on FamilySearch.  I use the OPC for Dorset extensively but the Hearth Tax for the parish I needed wasn't there nor were the Tudor Tax subsidies.
I did another Google search and found the Tudor records available as an ebook at GenFair.
Thanks again for your help, it was much appreciated.
