Strange surname
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 16:18 BST (UK) »
On a death certificate a great Grandmother of mine is written down as having the name Curnan Yatrina, i’ve never found any Irish records of this name and i was wondering if anyone has ever heard of it or similar names?

What makes you think she was born in Ireland ?

A quick search on that surname (MyHeritage.com) only throws up two examples and they are both from St Kitts

I suppose she may not have been born in Ireland but since her husband was from Ireland i assumed there’d be some sort of Irish record with her surname showing she lived there at some point but can’t seem to find any thing

Did you ever check the 1861 census page for place of birth which may be Leitrim - transcribed as ‘Leibrin’?

I think someone wrote (sorry I can’t find the post) that the McPadden name was very common in Inishmagrath, Leitrim.

This is a stab in the dark but I wonder, if at some time, surname and first name were reversed. The format you have though would go against my theory.: Curnan McPadon MS Yatrina’.
I was thinking Catherine /Caterina Curran/Kearnan etc.

Griffiths Valuation for Inishmagrath shows surnames:
Cornyn; Curran; Kearney

Added - Griffiths Valuation - sorry forgot to link it
