William Henry
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 20:22 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am a member of a history society in Castlehaven in County Cork. We are trying to track down a William Henry who died here in Castlehaven on 20th November 1920 during a typhoid outbreak. We know that he was married and we know that he was the Farm Steward on the Drishane Farm here in the local village, Castletownshend. The owner of this farm at that time was Edith Somerville who was a well-known author and wrote the Irish RM which was also successful as a TV series. Edith mentioned in her diaries that she visited William's widow (whose namewe do not know) a few times up to February 1921 but the widow then disappeared and they did not hear from her again.
I found a family tree on Ancestry that listed a William Henry that died in County Sligo on 20th November 1920 (same date). I cannot find a death for a William Henry in Sligo in November 1920 and I am wondering if it might be the same person. There was a William Henry who married Mary Ann Black in 1907 in Dromard and they had one daughter called Marguerita at the time of the 1911 census when they lived in Hazlewood Demesne in Calry. A  son, William, was born in 1916.  When I look at the 1943 wedding certificate of William's daughter, Marguerita, to Thomas Lockhart William's job was described as a Land Steward. We know from the 1911 census that Marguerita was born in England so they did move around. Does this mean anything to anybody. Would it be possible that our Castlehaven William Henry was from County Sligo.

Here it is, courtesy of two finger typing:

OBITUARY.
---------------
WILLIAM HENRY,  CASTLETOWNSHEND, COUNTY CORK.

It is with feelings of sincere regret we chronicle the death of Mr William Henry, of Castletownshend, Co. Cork, and youngest son of the late Mr James Henry and Mrs. Henry, Carrowlustia, Co. Sligo.  The sad event took place at his residence on Saturday last, the 20th inst., after a very brief illness, just about a fortnight's duration.  About four years ago he took up the position of landsteward on the Coghill Estate, Castletownshend, Co. Cork, where he has since resided with his wife and two children.  Deceased was very highly respected by his employers and everyone with whom he came in contact.  He was an efficient and reliable landsteward, with a thorough knowledge of all the branches of agriculture.  He also possessed a genial and friendly disposition, and his death, at the early age of 40, has come as a great shock to his sorrowing wife and family.  Amongst his friends he also leaves his mother and two brothers to mourn his loss, one brother, Samuel, being a farmer residing at Carrowlustia, Co. Sligo, and the other, George, is in the R.I.C., and presently stationed in Belfast.  We offer them our sincere sympathy on their sad bereavement.
The deceased's remains arrived in Sligo from Cork by motor hearse on Monday, and after service in Calry Parish Church on Tuesday, were removed for interment in the family burial ground, Drumcliffe, on Tuesday.  The cortege was large and representative, bearing testimony to the high respect in which the deceased's family is held in County Sligo.
The chief mourners were James, George and Samuel Henry (brothers), William and John Black (brothers-in-law), George Kerr (uncle), James and George Henry (nephews), William John and George Kerr (cousins), Tom Henry (personal friend).
The beautiful wreaths were as follows:-
"From sorrowing and heartbroken wife, Minnie"; "To darling Dad from Reta and Billy"; "From Lady Coghill, in memory of a dear and faithful servant."
Canon Ardill conducted the funeral services.

THANKS.
Mrs Henry and family desire to thank all kind friends who sympathised with them in their sad bereavement.

Hi Kiltaglassan.

Yes those are  the correct connections. Mary Anne Black was the daughter of my gt grandfather's sister Jane Livingston, and Thomas Black. It was my Livingston tree that had the same dates of death for William Henry but I did not have his place of death (or had assumed it was Sligo). The information came from a Livingston relative living in Sligo.

Marguerita died 1996 widow of Thomas Lockhart. There was also a brother William T Henry who died in Sligo in 2003.
