Charles August KNIGGE
« on: Friday 06 October 23 09:46 BST (UK) »
He married Catherine McINTOSH in Wellington on 25 Dec 1860, and they had four possibly five children. Catherine died in Wellington on 26 August 1894.

Can anyone find Charles August's death anywhere. If he died in NZ it must have been after 1911 as he shows up on PapersPast as returning from an extensive trip to Europe.

Online trees have his birth year as 1827.

There is a Charles Hermann KNIGGE death in Wellington in 1911 aged 71 so born c1840. Don't think this is him. Not buried with Catherine.

A couple of the daughters died in New South Wales but nothing showing up in NSW BDMs. He does appear in NSW papers in 1911, but was passing through Australia on his way home to NZ.

Thanks
Ian C

Edit
He married again in 1895 to Bertha NYANGUHL. Can't find her anywhere either.

Just bye the bye Charles August Knigge and Charles Hermann Knigge are brothers according to this extract from PP.
It was not unusual to have children with the same first names (in some continental European families) and being known by the second name so August & Hermann.

He may have returned to Wiesbaden after 1911

When in 1911 did he arrive in NZ?

He seems to be back and forth in the 1900s (with Bertha) and this places him in October 1911 heading back to Bremen (no Mrs Knigge mentioned):

Thanks for that. Not the only time Charles August was in court on assault charges from what I found.

Did find he was born 20 Jan 1837 and Helmstadt in Brunswick from his naturalisation. He was naturalised in 1853 whereas Hermann was not until 1905.

Jorose, got the red warning.

Can't find it again but was mid 1911. He was in Sydney in April 1911.

He might have gone back to Germany.

I see that in the birth details of one of his children he has acquired the name William as well as Charles August

The delving into the origins of the surname of the name Knigge and the family in early Wellington has been fascinating.

I pass Knigge's Avenue often and even with a smidgen of German language would have thought it was an English name.   And once again I marvel at the 'free-ness' of the press in those days (per our wonderful resource of Papers Past) in their expositions of the back stories of the day.  Nowadays these back stories would possibly never appear in the press.

All points to the hobby of genealogy being an easy way to learn history and social settings, if you needed an excuse to spend hours doing it!
