Saintfield, County Down

Hi friends, a bit of a weird name here. William John Mejury  born about 1850 to John Mejury and Isabella Scott. Can't find his parents marriage anywhere. In Glasgow where he lived until his death in 1910 his name changed spelling in the census and marriage, births of children etc. I have tried Mejury, Majury, Mc Jury, Mejorie etc. He had said he was born in Saintfield , County Down. I have heard are are several more variants of the spelling but thought some locals might be more familiar with it. Thank you in advance. Patsy x

Did he marry in Scotland?  If so - what spelling is on the marriage cert

There are a few possible variants of this name on Griffith's in co. Down, none of these is the civil parish for Saintfield, but worth checking to see if any are close by

Majory, Majury, McJory, McJurey and McJury

parishes are Bangor, Kilmore, Newtownards, Donaghadee, Killinch and Comber

p.s. one of the names is John McJury, but he's in Groomsport which is not near to Saintfield

The only Mejury/Scott marriage I’ve found on irishgeanology their names are Alexander  & Jane  they married 21 January 1851 district Newtownards Parish Bangor in the Co. of Down

Do you have William with his parents on any census? If so, when & where were they born?
What was his father's occupation?

Thank you for the quick replies folks. In the 1891 census in Glasgow he is William John Mejury. He marries a Helen Allen on 9/11/1877 in Glasgow aged 27 living at 37 Clyde St. fathers Occupation Farmer again John Merjury. Mother Isabella Scott. When he is 38 he appeals for aid to educate his 3 Children and states he is protestant and from Saintfield, County Down he says then his father was a shoemaker. before this his name was listed as Majury (with an accent)

I see  the 1877 marriage entry has 2 spellings as well - Mejurray & Mejury

Death reg is Mejury

Looking at entries on Family Search & SP  the surname Mejury/Majury  seems the likeliest possibility

Statutory registration of marriages only started in Ireland in April 1845. So if William’s parents married before that it won’t be in the statutory records. The marriage may be in a local church record for the  Saintfield area but those records may well not be on-line. And not all churches have pre 1845 records. You can see what exists for the Saintfield area from the PRONI catalogue. A personal visit to PRONI may be necessary to view them.

Wildshot but https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1897/05851/4658001.pdf is a death registration Saintfield Sub-District & Parish for a John Majury aged 86 in 1897, married, of Tullywest (written Lullywest) which is actually Tullywasnacunagh townland.

Is mid way between Saintfield & Ballynahinch. Adjacent to that townland but in Magheradroll Parish is Creevytenant and a widower John re-married 1860.
