Longstock School
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 00:03 BST (UK) »
My Great great grandfather, Thomas Smith, was a schoolmaster at either Longstock or Kings Somborne School in the early 1800's (he died in 1841 aged 72 and is described as 'a schoolmaster' on his death certificate).
Does anyone know anything about the history of either of these schools - or who I might approach?
Many thanks in advance

There is a publication "An account of the King's Somborne School : extracted from the "Minutes of the Committee of Council on Education, 1847-8." It says the school opened in October 1842, so it would appear your ancestor did not teach there. It is an interesting read and gives a good idea of what schools like this were like at the time. I'll see if I can find a copy online. (I accessed it via Gale Primary Sources, from my library eresources.)

A little about it here too:

Hi, Yes, thank you. Very useful - (but it’s Woodyear, not Goodyear - probably an issue with computer transcription. )

It is wonderful to have this help.

I meant to add yesterday that there was a mention of the Longstock village school in 1851. They sent 25 students to the Great Exhibition (Crystal Palace).

(also reported in a few other newspapers)

Shame I can't see any mention while Thomas SMITH was there.
