Ecclesfield and Sheffield Registers
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 08:53 BST (UK) »
Can anyone shed any light on why some events were registered at Sheffield Parish Church and others at Ecclesfield?
For example marriage of James Holmes and Esther Beard 21 Aug 1786 Sheffield Cathedral.
Birth of first child Elizabeth baptised 8th July 1787, Sheffield parents James and Esther
2nd child Salley 6th July 1788 Ecclesfield James and Esther.

Subsequent children all Ecclesfield.

Ecclesfield is part of Sheffield, and Bradfield (address given for Salley's baptism) is in the parish of Ecclesfield.

Did they baptise any more children?
If so where were they baptised?
Ecclesfield is only about 6 miles from Sheffield.

There could be any number of reasons they were at different churches.
It could be they moved from Sheffield to Ecclesfield between the baptisms of these two children.
Often couples got married in the parish of the bride, (does it give their parishes on the wedding entry?), and returned to the bride's parish for the baptism of the first child, so it may be that they actually lived in Ecclesfield.
Or maybe they just felt like going to the cathedral church to get married, had their first child baptised there, and then the rest at Ecclesfield as it was closer to where they lived.

The 1787 baptism image is not good, but I think that James' occupation is noted as Collier,

ADDED:  a different version of the entry, and James is definitely a Collier.

OK, I know exactly where Ecclesfield is I was born about 5 miles away! I looked through FindMyPast into the marriages in 1786. It seems most of them appear in the Ecclesfield St Marys register but when they become Bishops transcripts they appear as Sheffield. For Esther and James though there is no original in the Ecclesfield book which is a bit strange. Anyway, its obviously the same family. There is no other Esther Beard that fits.

Thanks for replies

I can see the original marriage entry via FindMyPast - look either for James HOLM or Esther Beard.  Neither signed the register, BUT there is no indication of which church, other than the transcription which says Sheffield Cathedral.

It might be an idea to contact Sheffield Archives to pinpoint which parish - after all you do have the information  :)
