Mary Jane Smith death 1891 Easingham
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 09:22 BST (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone have access to the local Easingham newspapers for 1891?  I was hoping to see if there was anything in the local newspapers for Mary Jane Smith (nee Bell) who died Sept. 1891.  Was a widow (husband Henry).
Thanks.

Hi, just checking - did you mean to say she died in Easington Registration district?
There is a Death Reg for a Mary Jane Smith, Q3 1891 Easington 10a 231, aged 69, is that the lady you are looking for?

Good, I tried but couldn't find an EasingHAM in Co Durham :-)

I looked in the available old newspapers but can't see a death notice for this lady  but I do have a transcript of a burial at Seaham Princess Road Cemetery for a Mary Jane Smith, aged 69, a widow buried on 30 Sept 1891. (no other details)

The Sunderland Local History Library say they  have the Seaham Weekly news 1860-1938 so that 'may' produce some results for a death notice but they have been undergoing refurbishment and wont re-open till 16th Oct if you want to visit or email them at the address on this page

Many thanks.  The transcript you have only gives the cemetery.  I can follow this up.  :-)
Is it possible to view the electoral rolls for this year, for her?  This could help me as well.

As far as I can tell Seaham Princess Road Cemetery records are likely to be held by the town council

https://seaham.gov.uk/index.php/information-events/more-information/cemetery. there is an email address at the bottom of that page, they may have details such as her last address etc. which aren't in the transcript. Nothing to lose by emailing and asking :-)

Do you have the death certificate?
Trees (if it's the right person) have Mary Jane Smith nee Bell in Preston, Lancashire, in 1881.

Maybe someone to worry about re the 1891 death :-\
There is a Mary Jane Smith, 59, widow, in Seaham Harbour, Dawdon in the 1881 census.
In 1871 she could be the Mary Smith, 49, with husband Thos, same place.
Possibly (ancestry hint) could be in Hamsterley in the 1891 census, sister in law, age 69, but, even so, there may be no death for her there. Perhaps she was just visiting. Place of birth always Bishop Auckland.

She was born in Bishopwearmouth, Durham bapt. 14/1/1822 (Father John Bell).
She was in Lancashire with her son (only child from what I know) where he was a performer on the stage.
Henry seemed to disappear (probably died) after 1881 as I cannot find him in the 1891 census.
Her return to Durham and her death in Sept 1891 seem to coincide with her sons possible death.
Just hoping to confirm all my research; but will buy (yet another cert). if I am not convinced one way or the other.

There's one who appears in West Derby, Liverpool, not so far from Preston
Mary L Smith, 70, born Sunderland, in 1891
Mary Smith, 80, born Sunderland, in 1901
A widow and a boarder. It does kind of look like an L in 1891.

A death in March 1904, West Derby, Mary Jane Smith, age 83.
Can't find a burial. So nothing to say it's the one from the census born Sunderland.
