Interesting Birth
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 11:27 BST (UK) »
In the Leeds Intelligencer of 7 Aug 1770 - there is the attached report! I do hope it's legible to you - but if not, it reads (with the letter 's' now substituted for the printed 'f').

'We are advised from Hull, that a few days ago, a person, who adopted the name of William --- , and in that character had served several gentlemen of that place as a domestic servant, giving general satisfaction, was safely delivered of a fine girl, to the great astonishment of all who knew HIM.'

(Presumably it wasn't a huge surprise to EVERYONE!)

Interesting!  I wonder if 'William' was actually a woman, who, for whatever reason, decided to use a male name.

Or perhaps the name was misheard and it was Wil..... whaever? Wilhelmina maybe?

Added:  The HIM being tongue in cheek?

Never really going to know are we.  ::)

Amusing, what a shame the surname isn't given.

I am wondering what happened if the child was baptised! What would the mother's name be? As you say Treetotal - such a pity there isn't a surname.

Indeed it is - or should I be relieved it's not, as there's a possibility my elusive gt, gt, grandfather was born at Hull around that very time and I've earmarked a William as possible father. The girl might have had a brother.

I mean, say it ran in the family... :o

That's hilarious, susieroe -- just imagine if it transpires that this baby was related to an ancestor of yours!

Sadly I don't think we'll ever know. It has crossed my mind that there may just be something in the Poor Law records for Hull. One day I might check.

This reminds me of Blackadder II, where a girl (Kate) pretended to be a boy (Bob) and became the manservant of Lord Blackadder.

She didn't get pregnant though.

Great memory, Zefiro - well done!

I used to love Blackadder - but don't remember that part. (Mind you I don't remember a lot of things these days!)

And we have "Gentleman Jack" in Halifax who was, in fact, Anne Lister - 1791-1840.
