Missing Grandparents
« on: Sunday 08 October 23 22:31 BST (UK) »
After a break of a few years I've finally been able to restart my family history research. I have several brick walls that are holding me up. The first one concerns my great grandparents.
William Prince born in Coventry in about 1871 married Annie Merrick (more likely Mary Ann Merrick) born in Sutton Cheney in 1869. The wedding took place on 16th March  1890 when the couple were both living at 196 Syston Street, Leicester.
After that date I can find no trace of William living with his family in the census returns although 7 children.
I also can't find Annie in 1891.
I know that William left Annie and went to live in Kidderminster Foreign where he may have bigamously married a woman who called herself Leah Bates and tried to claim his estate when he died but it eventually went to Annie

Can anyone find any trace of William that I am somehow missing or find Annie in 1891?
I'd be very grateful for any help in pinpointing their whereabouts as all my searches on Ancestry and FindMyPast are giving zero results.

William Prince born in Coventry in about 1871
Are you sure about that date?
I can see a baptism in Coventry in Nov 1867. Who were his parents? William and Emma?

1881 census he is 14 yrs (1867) - William is an inmate of the Leicester Union Workhouse

OR
There is a birth of a William Prince in 1871 but in Birmingham

You really need to get his age and his father's name from his marriage certificate to Annie Merrick.

In 1921 at Kidderminster Borough I can see William PRINCE, born 1869 Leicester, with Leah WEBB and her children.  She was the wife of Charles WEBB and formerly WHITEHOUSE and her husband was off living with another woman.  Electoral rolls show William and Leah at 18 Poplar Road until his death in 1932.  There is no marriage between William PRINCE and Leah, she continued to use the name WEBB.

Throwing this into the mix but it doesn't quite add up.

William married Annie 16.3.1890

Birth of 1st Prince/Merrick child,

PRINCE, ALFRED  JAMES     MERRICK
GRO Reference: 1890  J Quarter in LEICESTER  Volume 07A  Page 243

1891 census

No gro births for an Alfred Merrick in Leics 1889-93

Cannot trace any marriage of an Edwin B Merrick or birth that fits reasonably.

I looked at them last night.  In 1901 Alfred and Edwin are in Leicester, mother is 'Eliz'.  Annie was Annie RICHARDS and the next child was Archibald.  They went to Canada where she was back to Annie again.  The 'B' is for Brutus.

MERRICKS, ALFRED
Mother's maiden surname: RICHARDS

Thank you for the replies. Yes, my William Prince was born in 1867 in Coventry. His parents were William and Emma.

Annie Prince née Merrick was born in Sutton Cheney. The only child of George Merrick and Elizabeth nee Botrill or Boterill.

I can find Annie from birth through to death with the exception of the 1891 census. Beatrice McLean was her married daughter.

I can't find William after their marriage in 1890.

Leah Webb, whose surname I couldn't remember, so thank you for tracing her, did give herself the title of wife and use the name Mrs Leah Prince when registering the death. She was granted probate and awarded his small estate of less than £300.
Annie Prince contested it and a note was made on the probate record that the money was then given to Annie, William's legal but estranged wife.

As I understand it, William joined the airforce in 1918 until 1929. I also know, from his son William's army record, that that at the time of William jnr's death William senior was living in Mere Road in Leicester and was given William jnr's effects and war pay.im hoping to get some idea of when he actually left Annie and moved to Kidderminster.
