Foreign place name on a NZ war record 1919

Hello there, I'm trying to work out what Theodore Hays' father James's country of origin is (red arrow points to it). Any help gratefully appreciated!

Hi Trish! Thanks for all this! I am looking in particular for photos of Theodore and the house he built, as my husband and I have just relocated the house 150kms away from its original site!

I looked at on line Trees but cant seem to see anyone with a photo of him.
