Thank you all, I guess they must have divorced as you say. The strange thing is that on the 1939 Register for Ethel her name has been changed to Shove and a date of 1978 at the side, maybe that was the marriage year and maybe married elsewhere?

She could just have assumed the surname Shove, the 1939 register would show the date that the NHS amended her name.  She would not have had to change her name through legal means, she could call herself what she wanted to.
