Patrick McCabe's parentage
« on: Monday 09 October 23 16:31 BST (UK) »
Hello there!
I am curious about my great-grandfather, Patrick McCabe, who was born in (circa) 1833. He was apparently born in Carricmacross, Monaghan, although there isn't a concrete source on Ancestry that actually says CARRICMACROSS, rather on the 1871 and 1881 Censuses where is registering (Kent, England), Ireland is all he has put down (probs the only available option, IMHO). In 1852, he joined the British Army, in Liverpool. He married Sarah Hannah Tucker in 1864 in Ramsgate, Kent, and his father present was John McCabe. I was under the impression, that this is the same Patrick who was living in Manchester at the time of the 1851 Census. He was residing with two other individuals, one of which was Ann Bawl, the head of the household (then aged 60) and a John McCabe, then aged 42 years old (b. 1908/1909). I don't have much other concrete evidence though, whether this IS the same person, and I don't know why some of the users on Ancestry put down Carricmacross.

My suggestion, for what it is worth, follow what the records say rather than unsourced research which is plentiful on commercial websites.

Follow up on his military record, if you need help with that put up a post in the "Armed Forces" section of this site.

Source: Marriage Certificate
Patrick McCabe age 31, a bachelor, Sergeant 83rd Regiment resident at Cheriton son of John McCabe a Coachman.
Married 3 Apr 1864 at St Georges Church, Parish of Ramsgate.
Sarah Hannah Tucker, age 25, a spinster, resident at Bethesda St., Ramsgate, daughter of John Tucker a Fisherman.
Witnesses John Fyffe ?? and Eliza Tucker.

McCabe is one of the most populous surnames in County Monaghan.
