What a conundrum  :-\

1861 Civil parish   Shoreditch
Piece 249, Folio 12, Page number   17

Ann Chapman 50 Head - states married
Emma Thos Chapman 20   Daughter married  - image states Short

Same address as on her marriage.  So Emma Short nee Chapman b 1841 is the one with Ann as mother.

Do you have Emma Edwards nee Chapman b1843 on census....any clues?

Cas

I don't, no. Nothing until her marriage.

1861 Emma Short is with mother Ann b1841 age 20

1861 Your Emma age 17 is likely in household of Charles Curtis Chapman Jnr & family, as sister. Likely  met or introduced to her future husband as he is related to wife of CC jnr.

Not spotted her in 1851

They are separate women and can be followed on census after marriage. Maybe Charles Curtis senior and Ann separated and Emma b 1843 was the result of a new relationship.

There has to be separate mothers for both to be called Emma?

I don't think I ever looked at charles c jr's '61 census.  Thanks! What a complicated family structure.

Is there any chance you can see a potential birth registration or baptism for my Emma. One of the older sisters wasn't baptised as a child and had to be  baptised right before her marriage, so if there is a baptism it might be from when she's older? But who would stand in for the father if he's deceased at the time of an adult baptism?

There's no need for either parent to be present at a baptism. Also, no need for someone to be baptised before getting married.
