Isle of Man internment
« on: Tuesday 10 October 23 12:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, My paternal Grandfather was from Hungary.

He was born 1876. Came to England we think, when he was 14 and was interned in the Isle of Man for 4 years.

I understand that they were there as political, but what else could it have been?

Does anyone have any history of what/where and if any further documentation about the reasons and sentences they received would be available?

Most of the Internment records (WW1 and WW2) are with The National Archives at Kew.
But it might be worth looking at www.knockaloe.im - Internment Camp Visitor Centre.

Internees were classed as "enemy aliens", or those likely to assist the enemy.

Also, look at the relevant section of ManxNoteBook - http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/famhist/genealgy/intern.htm.

An excellent website by Frances Coakley.

I recently did some research on a WW2 Internee.
He was German, but married an English lady in the 1930s.
They moved to England; he was interned.

His son was a sculptor and painter, who left 3 archival boxes of correspondence at The Manx Museum.
I had the pleasure of going through all 3 boxes!

From a personal POV, the son moved to Somerset (my home county), while the father was an International Ice Hockey player, and that's my No 1 sport!
