Mrs Lergarge of 48a London Road Bexhill on Sea, England in 1930
« on: Wednesday 11 October 23 09:53 BST (UK) »
Henry Peter Audley was born 24th March 1908 according to both the 1939 register and his US naturalisation papers dated 1944.. In the 1939 Register he is recorded as Peter Henry Audley living at Fountain Inn in Cuckfield, Sussex and described as a Teacher at LCC Cookery School, London.

In 1930 he crossed the boarder from USA into Canada as Henry Audley. On that crossing he gives his nearest relative in the UK as his mother Mrs Lergarge  of 48a London Road Bexhill on Sea, England. I am not sure of the spelling of his mother’s name, and I have attached an image of her name and address to this Message from the record of the crossing.  The George Smith is the father of his first wife who he married in 1929 and I have not as yet ordered a copy of his marriage certificate.

Can  anybody interpret his mother’s surname.
    • Have I got the spelling correct?
    • Did a Mrs Lergrange really live at 48a London Road, Bexhill on Sea, England in 1930 or is this fictious?
    • When did she become Mrs Lergrange?

Thanks In anticipation of any help

Regards
Wirral Lad

When Henry first married in 1929 he was recorded as Smith and Lemoinge. Is this the name we should be looking at?

I note his death in USA 1991, which notes his DOB and the other information you mention. All on family search.

Also the marriage you mention below, however no birth registration for the surname Audley, there are a number of Henry Peter's in the greater London area so the marriage certificate looks to be essential.

Henry Audley to Phyllis N Smith Dec 1929 St. Martin, London

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

The name at "48a London Road, Bexhill on Sea" in the snippet (read as "Lergrange) looks more like the "Lemoigne" associated with the Dec Qtr 1929 marriage, which on FreeBMD appears as -

Marriages
Audley Henry...........Smith}
Lemoigne Henry.......Smith}
Smith Phyllis N........Audley}  St Martins  1a 1250
Smith Phyllis N....Lemoigne}

FindMyPast Electoral Roll 1931
St Helen's Ward,  Hastings.
Winifred Marie Lemoine, 68 St Helen's Park Road
(At the same address is a Mary Tomkins)

St Helens Park Road not too far from Bexhill on Sea

Chasing the Lemoigne name, there is a GRO birth registration -
Henri Lemoigne, Jun Qtr 1908, St Giles, London, 1B 538 - mother's name LeConte.

The June Qtr registration would "fit" the 24th Mar 1908 date of birth if the registration was slightly delayed?

FindMyPast Passenger Lists

A Phyllis Audley, age 23, occpn. Clerk, address 48a Lewis Flats, Chelsea, sailed 22 Mar 1930 from Southampton for New York.

"48a Lewis Flats" is one of the addresses in the snippet in the opening post.

When first checking the snippet I thought it something of a coincidence that two of the parties were at a "48a".
